As part of the fourth day of the Made Futures Virtual Careers Fair, Made in Group sat down with 5 industry experts from the Black Country, Shropshire & Staffordshire region, to discuss employability, provide an insight into the skills industry is looking for and highlight some practical ways to break into or develop a career in manufacturing.

With there being a different event every day of the expo within various regions throughout the country, these "Meet Britain's Makers" comprises a panel of experts who will share their own career stories, tips and information on their sector, followed by an opportunity to ask questions.

This event featured an expert panel of Philip Stanley (Threeway Pressings), Martin Smith (Bri-Stor Systems), Nick Thompson (Dudley College), John (Giovanni) D'Angelillo (Bauromat UK Limited) and Jonathan Horne (Laser Process Fabrication Ltd). Following on from these speakers providing a short introduction into themselves and their companies, Yasmin Banner of Made in Group began to ask the panelists questions

In terms of what skills are most desirable in job applicants, Martin Smith looks towards a strong “engineering base” as something which will probably always be vital. Ultimately, whilst the likes of IT proficiency and literacy ability is important, a solid understanding of the basics of engineering is “probably the most important thing we’re looking for”.

For Phil Stantley, those who have just began in the industry should never be afraid to ask questions if they want to learn. With the engineering industry constantly evolving, Phil suggested that people should never be discouraged from wanting to ask and learn.

Alongside this confidence to ask for help when it’s needed, “drive” are “commitment” were highlighted by Phil as essential traits for anyone hoping for success in the industry. Nick Thompson also foregrounded “attitude” as being absolutely vital, both in terms of breaking into the industry and also in succeeding once you’re in a role.

In terms of how an applicant can increase the chances of success when applying for a role, John D’Angelillo suggested that show an employer that you have researched the company first, and know what that business is really about, can be one of the most important things you can do. John himself started as a 16 year old apprentice and is now the owner of his own company; epitomising the idea that “manufacturing is what you make of it” - “if you put in the time, you will get the result”.

Why is manufacturing a good place for a career compared to other sectors? Well, Jonathan Horne answered this by suggesting that "making things" can be a very exciting process and therefore high levels of enthusiasm can often be seen in the people involved in this.

Following on from speaking with the expert panelists, Breakout Rooms were then created through Zoom, giving the chance for employers and jobseekers alike to network.
