Made in Group hosted a breakfast networking event with patron Birmingham City University (BCU) earlier this week. More than 40 members from the Midlands and Yorkshire visited the organisations STEAMhouse to network and be taken on a guided tour of the innovative facility.

Made in Group, including Made in the Midlands and Made in Yorkshire, is a membership organisation championing British engineering and manufacturing. Unlike other trade associations, Made in Group focuses on bringing business leaders together to share and learn best practices. The group’s major focus is bringing the sector up to speed with digital capabilities, including the introduction of bi-weekly virtual breakfast mornings, 3D scans of manufacturing capability and company microsites linked to highly ranked domains.

Face to face networking is crucial for business leaders to build industry relationships, learn and find opportunities in the sector. Made in Group’s most recent live event, hosted at STEAMhouse with BCU, saw members from both regions in attendance.

The morning began with refreshments and breakfast, whilst members spent time building important connections with each other. In attendance were business leaders from the likes of Mazak UK Ltd, ZF Lemforder, Hayley Group, Swiss Steel Group and more.

This was followed by a presentation from Clayton Shaw, Programme Manager at BCU’s STEAMhouse. A new centre for creative innovation in Birmingham, STEAMHouse is leading on cross sector interdisciplinary approaches. Such as connecting arts into STEM subject areas, and integrating academic research for innovation and future skills development.

After members took a tour of the extraordinary STEAMhouse, this included a look around the collaborative working areas where both businesses and students work together to tackle engineering, scientific or design challenges. In order to do so, the facility hosts a range of capabilities such as CNC machinery, welding and other production and prototyping areas for collaboration. The facility is broken up into 4 floors to create a hive for collaborative activity.

Finishing the morning of networking, 17 members of the 40+ members were invited to a roundtable discussion on People & Skills with BCU and Made in Group.
