With COP26 taking over the world’s mainstream media news this week, it's hard not to think about how we can be acting now to ensure the world’s net-zero goal by 2050. Addressing Climate Change issues should be at the top of our collective agenda, especially as industry leaders. So, What can manufacturers do now to ensure they are edging closer to net-zero?
What is COP?
COP26 is a term that has been on everyone’s lips over the last few days. In partnership with Italy, COP26 is the UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, UK from 31st October - 12th November 2021. COP stands for ‘Conference of Parties’ as the UN brings together almost every country on earth for global climate summits.
What is the UK's strategy for Net-Zero?
The UK’s approach to Climate Change is as long and in-depth as you may anticipate it to be. However we would like to focus on how the manufacturing industry and those related to the sector can make a difference to the planet’s rise in temperature. The aim of everyone ‘Going Green’ is to limit the earth’s temperature rising another 1.5 degree celsius before 2030. Reports show that global warming is likely to exceed these pre-industrial levels between 2030 and 2052.
A key element of the UK government's policy ambition revolves around reducing the construction sector's significant carbon footprint. For the UK, our main focus is to minimise the effects of the build industry, which apparently makes up for 40% of the UK’s total carbon footprint and heating, or energy usage, which accounts for around 37%.
Therefore the UK Government has ambitious plans to focus on developing a “thriving low-carbon hydrogen sector”, with a cleaner and more efficient energy system. When it comes to the construction industry, which manufacturing plays an integral role in, industry leaders are urged to look at how we can make carbon-intensive materials greener.
How can manufacturers Act now?
Whilst finding greener alternatives to current materials may prove to be difficult right now, we can control how much energy we use. With COP26 key focuses being power and transportation, how much energy we use and fuel we burn can help towards everyone’s goal of net-zero emissions.
Backing Britain 3.0 in April 2022 is a virtual exhibition that incorporates every aspect of physical events, whilst helping save the environment. Instead of the over usage of transportation to in-person exhibitions, manufacturers can capture leads, talk directly with relevant visitors and showcase their products or services through 3D immersive scans. By exhibiting at Backing Britain 3.0 manufacturers can showcase their dedication to net-zero to customers and competitors.
