Get involved in the Made in Group discussion groups and share your insights with other manufacturers. Made in the Midlands and Made in Yorkshire are industry associations hosted on the Made Platform, a private digital network for manufacturers and their industry influencers to share their experiences.

This week's discussion group discussed the 'productivity puzzle'. With rising labour, material and energy costs; productivity is back on the agenda of managerial conversations. How can productivity match the pressure to increase wages? Key discussion points included; change management, software adoption and workflow interruptions.

The discussion talked about how technology can be seen as a multiplier. Increasing the productivity of a person or department without technology, even single-digit growth, would be a challenge.

The 'Productivity' discussion group debated barriers to accessing technology productivity. Employees and managers struggle with the change and adoption of new processes, with buy-in and consistent adoption being common problems.

Jason Pitt, Made in Group, said, "Regarding change management, I have just finished reading a book by the author and anthropologist David Graeber, which offers one explanation of why change management is such a challenge. Graeber discusses the rise of jobs that are not productive.

One idea I expanded on from reading the book is how not just employees but managers can resist change as a survival strategy. This could include the building of fiefdoms and unnecessary jobs that form a protective layer around the head of that department.
