Sleep Pod, an organisation that produces temporary shelters for rough sleepers, held a build workshop at Superite Tools on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th January. Volunteers and members of the MIM team had the opportunity to build the life-saving shelters that are distributed to homeless people imminently after the workshop.
Made in Team members, Jason Pitt, Alessandro Sorrentino, and Yasmin Banner took part in the build on Sunday 19th to be part of creating life-saving solutions to rough sleeping. Late last year, MIM donated £1,000 towards the cause, which helped purchase the materials for the build that day. The materials bought for the weekend cost £5,000 and were gathered through fundraising and donations.
The aim of the six-hour workshop, from 10 am until 4 pm, was to build sixty shelters in total which would be distributed to three local charities - a Birmingham support group, Outreach, and a Wolverhampton based charity. The organisations collected the shelters the same day and were then given away to rough sleepers that evening.
Superite Tools, a Made in the Midlands member, held the workshop at their premises in Walsall. Jessica Collins, Marketing Support at Superite and daughter of Managing Director Martin Collins, organised the build along with a family friend. Jessica said they decided to hold the workshop at Superite Tools because they had space and it was for a good cause.
CEO of the Made in Group Jason Pitt, was introduced to Sleep Pod through Superite Tools and wanted the team to take part as the concept fits in well with MIM’s Made Equal campaign, he said:
“By being part of the Sleep Pod build we have gained more than just donating to charity, we have bought the raw materials and have seen the end result. Each of the pods cost £25 to build and now there are more than 40 on the streets from that one build day.
The Made in Group takes part in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) days, where the team will earn an extra annual leave day from work by taking part in charity work.
Superite Tools will be holding another Sleep Pod Workshop on 1st and 2nd February, you can find out more by clicking on the link below.
