The Made in Group hosted another online networking event for its members today, connecting Midlands and Yorkshire manufacturing decision makers. This week we saw Pegler and Birmingham City University discuss sustainability in business and the importance of Cybersecurity for manufacturers.

The Backing Britain Breakfast mornings from the Made in Group give its 400+ members the chance to connect, build industry relationships and ultimately encourage reshoring manufacturing to the UK. Industry professionals hear from three industry leaders from within the group, learning best practice and more about the businesses the speakers are part of. Unique to the Made in Group, members can select what breakout discussions they would like to be part of to discuss current and contemporary topics in manufacturing such as Industry 4.0, supply chain issues and more.

Alberts Integrated Piping Systems, otherwise known as Pegler, has been around since the 1890’s based in Doncaster, Yorkshire. They are known as one of the leading manufacturers of advanced plumbing, heating and engineering products. What makes Pegler unique is their dedication to producing the materials here in the UK, forging recyclable copper and brass for their products.

Steve Currid, Head of New Product Development at Alberts Integrated Systems, highlighted the company’s economic strength and circular economy through its ability to forge their own material. Now with their largest ever forging press, the company is able to supply tens of thousands of products to market and have become a reliable supplier for countries across the world, responding to increasing pressure of material shortage. Steve said:

“Pegler valves have been integral to the UK infrastructure for well over a century with the ability to recycle products at the end of their working life. One of the biggest challenges forging companies face is the preconception that the process isn’t environmentally sustainable. Our products demonstrate sustainability at a different level and allow customers to feel like they are achieving their own sustainability measures.”

Ron Austin, Associate Professor in Network Security from Birmingham City University (BCU), spoke about the importance of cybersecurity for manufacturing business professionals. He demonstrated how worryingly easy it is for cyber attackers to access sensitive information on someone's desktop and even their camera and microphone. Ron said:

“As demonstrated, to set up a phishing website all it takes is six lines of code and if a hacker manages to get you to click their link, all of your information and access to your computer is the hackers. It takes only seven minutes to achieve this and even if your computer is off, they can still use it. It is important that we start to think about cybersecurity and if you need a hand, BCU is here to help.”
