Why Does Your Website Need to Be Using HTTPS?

Slowly but surely, the majority of the internet has adopted HTTPS. With statistics showing that the majority of the world's top one million websites now use HTTPS, any companies without this badge of safety have begun to stand out; in a bad way.

Standing for Hypertex Transfer Protocol Secure, this is the secure version of the standard HTTP that your web browser willl use when communicating with other website. Whilst it was used to be primarily reserved for dealing in sensitive data such as passwords, it has now become an absolute must for all types of companies, as users expect to be given a secure and private experience.

A simple HTTP - security-less - site, not only gives others the opportunity to eavesdrop on users' data whilst it is in transit, but it also allow for an internet service provider to tamper with the web pages; for example, adding content to the page, modifying it and even removing certain elements.

How HTTPS Keeps You Safe

No one can intercept information sent over an HTTPS connection. This internet communication protocol keeps all data confidential and secure.

The major benefit of this is, of course, online shopping and banking. However, it also provides essential privacy for normal web browsing.

For example, if your website is not using HTTPS, then anyone on the same Wi-Fi network would be able to track their searches - as would their internet service provider. As stated above, an internet service provider would also be given the opportunity to modify or tailor the content of a site differently.

In an era when anxiety over data security is constantly growing, simply not providing a HTTPS connection for your potential customers and clients to browse over, will be enough to turn off the majority. It's simply not worth the risk.

Am I Browsing on a HTTPS Site Right Now?

Sites that do not use HTTPS are shown differently to users than those which are. For example, when using Google Chrome, you will see a padlock icon next to the URL. However, those which neglect this internet communication protocol will be transmitting a "Not Secure" icon in red to any users which navigate to their site.

If you are browsing on Google Chrome or a similar web browser, you will be able to see a mark of security alongside the Made in the Midlands / Made in Yorkshire URL.

How Do I Get My Website Secure with HTTPS?

Dependant on the type of SSL certificate you require, which is variable by your individual requirements (e.g. whether you have an eCommerce website), the cost of getting HTTPS secure can cost hundreds in the subscription price. However, this is a small price to pay for the security, safety and user experience of your potential clients and customers.
